Disability insurance pays out between R50 000 and R10 million in the event of the permanent disability of the insured. These funds can be used to:

  • Replace all or some of your income if you are unable to work
  • Settle your outstanding debt to reduce your monthly expenses and secure assets like your house and car
  • Remodel your home to cater for your disability
  • Customise your car to allow you the freedom to travel independently

No medical check ups, just an HIV testNo medical examinations required for the 1Life Disability Cover, just an HIV test. You can do your test at any participating Link Pharmacy with just a cheek swab or via a blood test at any Lancet Laboratory.

Fixed premiumsNo increase in your premiums for the first 24 months and thereafter they will only increase by 5% per year. (For example, if you are paying R150 per month, the increase after 24 months will only be R7.50)

Premium waiverIf available on the policy, this benefit is only applicable if the policyholder/owner is also the life assured and is also responsible for the payment of premiums. If the life assured becomes disabled and is paid a lump sum disability benefit, the premiums for Pure Life Cover and dread disease cover (if applicable) will not be charged for a certain period, as stated in the policy schedule.

Guaranteed assurabilityYou can increase your cover amount with no medicals on your policy anniversary or if you get married, have a child or buy a new home.

Waiting periodsYou are covered immediately for accidental and natural death. Suicide is covered after 24 months.

How is my premium calculated?Your life insurance premium is based on your specific risk profile. This means that factors like your age, gender, occupation and health will all be considered when your monthly premium is calculated.

Use the insurance calculator to work out how much cover you and your family need against death, disability and dread disease.

When will a disability insurance policy pay out?1Life Disablement Cover pays out in the event of the disablement of the life assured, depending on the type and amount of cover bought.

With 1Life Disablement Cover you can choose between two types of disability insurance:

  • Occupation-based Disablement: pays out if you are permanently and totally disabled and cannot work – either at your normal job or any other work to which you are suited
  • Event-based Disablement: pays out a percentage of your cover amount for disability according to the tables in your policy book. This type of cover pays out even if you are still able to work. Once a cumulative amount of 100% of the total sum assured has been paid out, no further payouts for this benefit will be considered and cover will cease

Please refer to the 1Life Policy book for more detail on Occupation-based and Event-based Disablement.

When would a disability insurance claim be rejected?A claim will be rejected if the following causes the disability:

  • Participation in war, civil unrest, riots or terrorism
  • Participation in criminal activity
  • Radioactivity and nuclear explosions
  • Failure to obtain and/or follow reasonable medical advice
  • The life assured wilfully and materially breaking any law
  • Material misrepresentation or non-disclosure of information before the commencement date
  • Self-inflicted injury or illness
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol and or drugs
  • Participation in any hazardous sport or pursuit, unless the life assured informed us of this activity

Other exclusions – or conditions under which claims might be rejected – will also be listed in the policy schedule that is issued to you when your purchase your policy.
