Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Protecting the 48% of South African women solely responsible for their household’s financial obligations

13 October 2025 - As South Africa observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month this October, 1Life Insurance is calling attention to the critical need for financial protection in the face of chronic illness. Women bear the heaviest burden, with breast cancer being the most diagnosed cancer among women globally.

In South Africa alone, 50-57% of South African women are diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer (stages III or IV) with women of colour being the most affected by advanced-stage diagnoses. The World Health Organization reports that while the 5-year survival rates in high-income countries exceeds 90%, the figures drop to 40% in South Africa.

“This is concerning if we consider that these are the same women who form the backbone of South African households. According to our recent Women’s Survey, 48% of South African women are solely responsible for their household’s financial obligations. Yet, many remain financially vulnerable in the absence of life or dread disease cover—especially if the primary breadwinner falls ill or passes away,” says Corli Basson, Business Manager: Underwriting at 1Life Insurance.

“South African women need to prioritise both health screenings and financial planning to protect themselves and their families against the long-term impact of serious illness such as cancer,” urges Basson.

The truth is that chances of successful treatment increase dramatically with regular screenings and early detection, but early detection and treatment still need finances and so these two concepts go hand in hand.

Elevating the financial burden that comes with being diagnosed with cancer

Being a breadwinner means more than just providing day-to-day support, it means safeguarding your family’s lifestyle and financial future” adds Basson.

A dread disease cover will play a vital role when facing serious health challenges such as cancer with benefits that vary based on the stage of diagnosis. A breast cancer diagnosis can often lead to income loss and costly treatments not fully covered by medical aid however, a dread disease payout can help fund medical care, support recovery, and cover lifestyle adjustments—such as hiring a caregiver or arranging transport for children.

While breast cancer is more common in women, men are also affected and should bear in mind the impact of such a diagnosis.  This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 1Life Insurance encourages all South Africans to honour the strength of those impacted by breast cancer, especially the women, and to reflect on how we can support them not just emotionally, but practically too.

Dread disease cover offers more than just peace of mind; it offers financial protection during life’s most difficult moments, ensuring that the women who hold our families together are well protected, while their loved ones who depend on them can focus on healing without the added burden of financial stress,” concludes Basson.
