Funeral cover provides you or your family with the funds they need to cover funeral expenses and other costs related to the death of a family member. You choose how much cover you want for each family member and a monthly premium you can afford. In the event of the death of a family member, your funeral insurance policy pays a lump sum to you, and in the event of your death your policy pays out a lump sum to the beneficiary named in the policy schedule.

The cost varies, depending on factors like whether it is a burial or cremation, the type of casket and headstone and how many mourners are catered for.

Your premium depends on your age, the amount of cover you buy and the number of additional family members that you insure on your policy. If you buy your funeral cover online, you will save 40% on your monthly premiums!

Yes. Immediate and extended family can be covered on a 1Life Funeral Cover policy. You can include up to 2 spouses, up to 5 children (up to the age of 21 years) and 9 extended family members, including 4 parents (up to the age of 75 years) or parents-in-law (up to the age of 65 years). You can cover 2 spouses, up to 5 children (up to the age of 21) and 9 extended family members including 4 parents or in-laws at an additional cost per member. There must be insurable interest in the person that you are covering under the policy, meaning that there needs to be a blood or legal relationship with the person you are adding to the funeral policy.

There is no waiting period for accidental death - you and your family members are covered immediately, as soon as you take out the policy and we have received the first premium. For natural death, such as from an illness, the waiting period is 6 completed months and 6 paid premiums.

In addition to the cover amount, 1Life Insurance also provides your family with:

• A premium waiver in the event of the main member dying so that the policy stays in place for other members for up to 6 months*.
• Grocery benefit: if the main member passes away their family will receive a grocery benefit of up to R6 000.
• Headstone benefit: Your beneficiary has access to a headstone to the value of R5 000 to assist with buying a headstone for the unveiling, on the anniversary of a successful claim**.
• Repatriation service: a repatriation service is offered to transport the deceased from place of death from any SADC country to South Africa only and adhere to cultural requirements in this respect.
• Valid claims paid out within 24 business hours of approval.
